IEC 61131-3 is an international standard for programmable logic controllers (PLCs) that specifies the programming languages and development environments that can be used to program PLCs. The standard was developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and was first published in 1993.
IEC 61131-3 defines five programming languages that can be used to program PLCs:
Ladder Diagram (LD): This is a graphical language that is similar to the relay logic diagrams used in traditional control systems. It uses symbols to represent the various logic functions and control operations.
Function Block Diagram (FBD): This is another graphical language that is based on block diagrams. It allows for the creation of reusable function blocks that can be easily interconnected to form complex control systems.
Structured Text (ST): This is a high-level textual language that is similar to Pascal or C. It allows for more complex programming structures and mathematical calculations.
Instruction List (IL): This is a low-level textual language that is similar to assembly language. It is typically used for very low-level control applications or for optimizing performance in high-speed control systems.
Sequential Function Chart (SFC): This programming paradigm uses a graphical language to represent a system's behavior as a series of interconnected steps or stages.
In addition to specifying the programming languages that can be used, IEC 61131-3 also defines a standard for the development environment, including the user interface, debugging tools, and documentation requirements.
Overall, IEC 61131-3 provides a standardized approach to PLC programming, which makes it easier for PLC programmers to develop and maintain control systems across different manufacturers and applications.
