The 2018 Farm Bill took hemp off the list of controlled substances, leaving states to figure out what that means for them, and sparking curiosity on the part of many farmers about growing it. Last fall, Field Work co-host Mitchell Hora visited with first-time industrial hemp grower Scott Thellman of Juniper Hill Farms in Lawrence, Kansas to learn about his experience in 2019. Since producing the video, we learned that Scott has decided to skip growing hemp in the 2020 season, as it’s more lucrative for him this year to focus on vegetables this year. But his experience last year as a hemp newbie still offers a lot of valuable--and entertaining-- lessons for farmers.
