Who gets to define womanhood—and what happens when women refuse to go along?
In this episode of Those Who Speak, Courtney Schneider and Christina Woods sit down with award-winning filmmaker, writer and artist Nevline Nnaji, known online as N3VLYNNN, to discuss her anthology She Holds The Line: Black Women Speak on Gender Ideology.
Nevline began questioning the prevailing narratives around gender identity long before the issue became a major cultural flashpoint. In 2013, she published a video titled Trans Women Are Not Female. Years later, after speaking about the experiences of Black lesbian detransitioners, she says her social media accounts were taken down.
We explore why she decided to speak out, what she believes is missing from mainstream discussions about gender, and why she wanted to bring together 13 Black women with different experiences and perspectives.
IN THIS CONVERSATION:
• Why Nevline spoke out about gender identity in 2013
• The story behind She Holds The Line and the 13 women featured in the anthology
• Black women, lesbian identity and the experiences of detransitioners
• Women's prisons, safeguarding and the experiences described by female inmates
• Why Nevline believes the label “transphobic” can be used to silence dissent
• Censorship, professional consequences and the social cost of speaking out
• Why women may privately disagree with prevailing narratives but remain reluctant to speak publicly
• What it takes to stand by your convictions when doing so comes at a cost
