Turmeric has been used in traditional Indian medicine for hundreds and thousands of years. But can it really help cure your acne?
Preliminary studies show that turmeric, and its active ingredient curcumin, has some healing properties. It can reduce known acne causes such as bacteria, insulin and inflammation.
When applied topically, test tube studies have shown turmeric to be anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory. One study showed curcumin being 36 times stronger than azelaic acid against the bacteria P.acnes.
Turmeric also has kerolytic effects, meaning that it reduces the clumping of skin cells that block pores.
When taken orally, turmeric may reduce some risk factors of acne. Some studies suggest that using a combination of both oral and topical curcumin showed the best improvement in acne cases.
Idirect benefits of turmeric that might help you fight acne:
1) It has the potential to reduce insulin resistance. Insulin is one of the important hormones of adult acne sufferers.
2) Turmeric also has some anti-inflammatory effects and acne patients generally have higher levels of inflammation.
3) Curcumin can inhibit the mTor-pathway which is pretty much the master control of acne.
So far there have been no serious side effects of turmeric and it seems to be minimally toxic. But it may lead to gut-related problems such as nausea, diarrhea and stomach pain. It can also interfere with certain medications and increase the risk of anemia, by binding iron. Turmeric is also very yellow and might cause some yellow staining.
There has been some claims that turmeric becomes a phototoxic substance upon sun exposure. Meaning that when exposed to sunlight, turmeric might cause cell injury and death. But this has yet to be confirmed. What we do know, is that light exposure decreases the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin.
How should you use turmeric for acne?
You can apply turmeric directly to the skin as a face mask. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric powder and one tablespoon of honey with a little bit of warm water. The consistency of the paste should be just enough to make it stick to your face without dripping. Wait for the paste to cool down and apply it on your skin. You can remove it from your skin after 15 to 20 minutes.
We recommend you to apply the face mask it in the evening and to use sunscreen the following day. You should not leave the mask on your skin overnight.
If you want to take turmeric orally, you can either take supplements in the form of capsules or powder or you can prepare a tea out of it. Boil 4 cups of water and add 1 teaspoon of powdered turmeric. Let it simmer for 10 minutes, strain it into a container and allow it to cool before ingesting it.
The skin health benefits of turmeric can vary greatly from person to person. Most acne studies evaluate the effects of turmeric over a period of 8 to 12 weeks. So you may have to wait at least two months before seeing any improvement in your acne.
