Ruggero Raimondi reflects on his own interpretation of the central character of Don Giovanni. Arguably one of the finest performers of this role, Raimondi has sung it in many of the major opera houses of the world, starred in Joseph Losey’s film of it, and has even directed it himself in the opera house. His comments and insight lead straight to the heart of this enigmatic work. In addition to taking the viewer through all the various stages of preparation for the opera’s production, the film eavesdrops on Raimondi relaxing with friends, passing on his knowledge and experience to younger singers at the Bologna Conservatory, and considering another key role in the bass-baritone repertoire – in many ways the opposite of Don Giovanni: that of Massenet’s Don Quichotte, inspired by Cervantes’s immortal figure Don Quichotte of La Mancha. The glorious Italian countryside and rich architecture of Bologna itself provide a fitting backdrop to this revealing film about the life and thoughts of one of the finest Italian singers of recent years.
