I've been building Big Blues for over 10 years. One time while I was out on the Oregon coast, I visited a dealer of ours was buying an inordinate amount of Big Blues for the size of his town and market. I had to discover what it was that was prompting all of these sales. He told me that he was renting out Big Blues to his customers to sterilize their grow spaces between harvest and planting.
It was at that point that I realized that the Big Blue had other benefits other than just odor control. I began to read about pests and ozone, and discovered a couple of things.
Hospitals for example, are using ozone to sterilize their surgical equipment. The Department of Forestry and Agriculture in New Zealand is using ozone to kill pests that come to their shores in shipping containers.
So when those containers arrive, they gas them with ozone. They have discovered that ozone works better than any chemical that they have employed in the past and that it will kill pests and insects and their eggs.
Cockroaches, mealybugs, ants and spiders... in anywhere from one half hour to two and a half hours with 10,000 PPM of ozone.
Take your Big Blue out of the exhaust ducting, put it in your grow space, seal up the doors and run that thing for 24 hours.
The ozone gas will get in the cracks and crevices; the places where the spider mites lay their eggs, where they hibernate until the conditions are right for them to come back out again. If you have had spider mites in the past, trust me, you're gonna' have them again.
Use the Big Blue to sterilize that space. The gas gets behind your reflective material; it gets to places you will never get with diluted chlorine and a sponge, believe me.
One thing that I do want to point out is, be sure there is nothing in your grow space that is alive. No plants, no cuttings, no pets, none of your children.
