We take a look at the evolution of a trainer we've nicknamed "The Island." What started as a collection of misfit products has arguably become our most valuable resource for teaching complex industrial communication. We are moving away from the "zip-tied" look to formalize the layout, focusing on specific exercises like IO-Link mapping, bite swapping, and Modbus TCP. You'll see how we use these preloaded exercises to challenge students, such as identifying why a specific light is active or determining the steps needed to trigger a specific output.
We also dive into the hardware side, including the use of Kinetix 2198 drives and the debate over managed versus unmanaged switches. I address a common question regarding the lack of wire labels; these trainers are intentionally designed to force students to trace circuits and think through the wiring logic. Along the way, we troubleshoot some "angry" red blinking lights caused by current draw issues and demonstrate how simplifying the power distribution cleared up the faults. We wrap up by looking at the IO-Link sensors in action and asking for your feedback on whether we should stick with basic switches or integrated network switching for the final touches.
