"People wear fur coats, it's about vanity. People have spent thousands and thousands of dollars to wear the skins of dead animals. People here aren't going out to the streets for vanity. People here are going out to the streets to survive. People here need help. And so we've come here, donated these fur coats that have been devalued, they are no longer worth anything. They've been cut, they've been painted, but at least it's going to bring them a little bit of warmth."

"I think this is absolutely wonderful. The weather's been pretty good the last week or so, but a lot of days I've been out there and I've been cold. So, this is definitely appreciated. A very generous gift."

"My coat is black, I think it's a black lynx, I'm not sure. But I love it. It fits perfect."

STORYLINE
Seventy homeless women in the US received free fur coats on Wednesday, courtesy of PETA - the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
PETA donated the coats to the Community for Creative Non-Violence shelter in Washington DC.
The women were allowed to pick their own coat from a variety of mink, seal, lynx and sable furs.
PETA said the coats were used in various protests and other demonstrations against the wearing of fur.
It added that all the coats were donated by people who were now committed to not wearing furs.
There are nearly 13-hundred residents at the Community for Creative Non-Violence shelter, including men, women and families that are homeless throughout much of the year.
