Decoding Practice!
Focusing on vowel teams, oa, oe, ow
For my tutoring sessions, I alternate between the powerpoint in the UFLI toolbox, and this worksheet for each lesson I teach. When it comes time to practice decoding, I choose to have the words on paper instead of reading from the powerpoint so we can “touch” the words. I can then closely monitor the decoding process.
Three things I focus on during this time:
Pointing to the words.
Sounding them out in their heads and then reading them “Look, Think, Say”.
Chunking the word into smaller parts to make it easier to decode.
More about “Look, Think, Say”:
I learned this strategy in the program, Really Great Reading. I use this when a student has been able to decode words for a while, but still continues to sound the word out. By taking a moment to look at the words and think about it, they start to sound it out in their head and then when they say it, it comes out as the full word. Often I think they are hesitant to try or don’t take the time to really think about it. This leads to them guessing or continuing to just sound out words. I have found it incredibly successful.

*I am not affiliated with UFLI. I use these free tools on the UFLI website to guide my tutoring sessions with students. I follow many of the steps suggested, but also add activities and/or games as I see fit for the students’ needs.
**I was a reading specialist in schools for many years. I am by no means an expert, but these tips and tricks are suggestions I have picked up through my years of teaching reading. I often see success with these, so I use them often. Feel free to ask any questions if you need clarification!
