while documenting traditional dress in the Sierra ZOngolica of Veracruz a family of curanderos from Tlaquilpa invited me to a ceremony inside a cave. The purpose of the ceremony was The Xochicali, a Nahua ceremony to ask forgiveness for damage to mother earth and permission to plant and harvest. These herbal doctors ask permission to cut the herbs and for a blessing for their successful use. The ceremony takes place in a cave.
We walked through the jungle and finally arrived at the cave. Gradually other curanderos arrived as did the anthropologist from the CDI ( Commission for Development of Indigenous People). IT was an attempt to recover the tradition. Before the ceremony, the anthropologist explained the purpose of the ceremony. I found it to be heartfelt as the curandera thanked mother earth for the blessings and asked forgiveness for any harm that was done.
