Abu Simbel is not only home to two renowned ancient rock-cut temples but it is about as far south as one can go in Egypt, practically up against the border with Sudan, 12 miles away.
The temples are shrines to Pharaoh Ramesses II and the favorite of his eight wives, Nefertari, built as a way of exerting influence over the ancient kingdom of Nubia, which the Egyptians later annexed.
To get there, as you’ll see in the video, I joined up with a small group for a 3 ½ hour minivan ride starting in the wee hours of morning from Aswan and with a sunrise breakfast stop in the desert.
