The biggest storm of 2020 has hit the Philippines, with strong winds and intense rain causing flooding and mudslides. Typhoon Goni hit yesterday morning and made its way across the main island, Luzon, just missing the country's capital of Manila.
It brought intense rain and winds of up to 225kms per hour, which caused flash flooding in many areas, along with power outages and mudslides. At least 10 people have died, while hundreds of thousands have fled to evacuation centres, but that's left authorities worried about something else.
The Philippines has the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases in South-East Asia and all those people under one roof means it could spread more easily. So special self-contained tents have been set up for each family in an effort to keep everyone safe and slow the spread.
Typhoon Goni's now been downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm, and moved on the from the Philippines, leaving locals with a big task ahead to start the cleanup.
QLD ELECTION
Queensland has made history with the results of its state election. The Labor party scored a big win over the Liberals in the sunshine state, making Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk the first woman to win 3 elections in Aussie history.
NO CASES AUSTRALIA-WIDE
There's been some more good COVID news for Aussies. Over the weekend, Australia recorded its first donut day since June. That means there were no new cases anywhere in the country. Now that Victoria seems to be getting on top of things, the Northern Territory has announced people from regional Victoria won't need to quarantine when they cross the border!
RUGBY
It's wasn't the weekend the Wallabies were hoping for. It's been almost 20 years since the Aussies have won the Bledisloe Cup against arch-rivals the All Blacks, and it looks like it's going to be at least one more year before the drought is broken. By half time, the All-Blacks were already a whopping 26 points ahead, and it didn't get much better in the second half, as New Zealand ended up thrashing Australia 43-5. They'll face each other again in the final match of the series on Saturday.
TOUR DOWN UNDER
The Tour Down Under is the latest sports event to be cancelled because of COVID-19. Organisers say that the normal January event won't go ahead, because international border closures mean that many riders won't be able to compete. Instead, they've decided to hold a smaller local event instead, which will still feature some of the world's best cyclists.
F1
In Formula 1, Aussie Daniel Ricciardo has scored his second podium finish for the season in Italy. To celebrate, he and race winner Lewis Hamilton shared a special moment, by doing a shoey, which is about as gross as it looks.
SURFING
And check out these daredevil surfers. Big wave season is back on at the famous Nazare beach in Portugal! Surfers from around the world come and try to tackle these monstrous waves, the size of multi-story buildings. It's safe to say some surfers more successful than others! Ouch.
LEMUR TRIPLETS
Tucked away underneath their mum are three black-and-white ruffed lemurs! Perth Zoo recently celebrated World Lemur day by showing off these new babies. Apparently twins are pretty common, but it's the first time ever that the zoo has had triplets.
DRIVERLESS RACING CAR CRASH
One, two, three. This self-driving race car in the UK cut its test race short, lasting just 3 seconds before face planting into a barrier. As you can probably guess, nobody was hurt, although the driverless car's creators may be rocking slightly bruised egos.
OBAMA SHOOTS A 3
Our 3rd and final three comes from former US president Barack Obama. On his way out of a campaign event, the former President calmly sank a 3 pointer. The clip went viral, racking up more than a million likes on Twitter, with the former pres even scoring some props from NBA star LeBron James.
