Today, I wish to speak on a topic that is both timeless and practical—Dhamma in the Buddha’s Teaching.
⸻
2. Meaning of Dhamma
The word Dhamma in Pali has many shades of meaning:
• Truth – the natural law that governs life and the universe.
• The Buddha’s teachings – the path to liberation.
• Righteousness – wholesome qualities that lead to peace and harmony.
In Dhammapada verse 276, the Buddha said:
“Tumhehi kiccam ātappaṁ, akkhātāro Tathāgatā”
The Tathāgatas only show the way; you yourselves must strive.
Here, Dhamma is the way shown by the Buddha—the universal truth that we can experience for ourselves.
⸻
3. The Two Aspects of Dhamma
The Buddha taught that Dhamma has two aspects:
1. The Truth that Exists Naturally (Sabhāva Dhamma)
• Like the law of cause and effect (Kamma), impermanence (Anicca), suffering (Dukkha), and non-self (Anattā).
• These truths exist whether a Buddha arises or not.
2. The Truth as the Teaching (Pariyatti Dhamma)
• The Four Noble Truths
• The Noble Eightfold Path
• The 37 factors of enlightenment
• These are the teachings the Buddha shared to guide us in living according to truth.
⸻
4. Practicing Dhamma
Knowing Dhamma is not enough—we must live it.
The Buddha compared learning without practice to a person who counts another’s cattle—he gains no milk for himself.
The practice of Dhamma can be summarised into:
• Dana – Generosity, opening the heart.
• Sila – Morality, creating harmony.
• Bhavana – Meditation, purifying the mind.
Through these, the heart becomes free from greed, hatred, and delusion.
⸻
5. Dhamma in Daily Life
Applying Dhamma in everyday activities transforms ordinary life into a path of awakening. For example:
• In the workplace – practicing right speech, honesty, and patience.
• In family – practicing compassion, forgiveness, and respect.
• In society – avoiding harm, spreading kindness, and acting for the welfare of others.
The Buddha said in Dhammapada verse 354:
“Sabbadānaṁ dhammadānaṁ jināti”
The gift of Dhamma excels all other gifts.
When we share Dhamma—by word, action, or example—we give the highest gift.
⸻
6. Conclusion
The Dhamma is like the morning sun—it dispels the darkness of ignorance and brings the warmth of wisdom. The Buddha has given us the map; it is up to us to walk the path.
Let us remember:
• Learn the Dhamma – to know the way.
• Practice the Dhamma – to walk the way.
• Share the Dhamma – to light the way for others.
⸻
7. Closing Blessing
May you all be blessed with the light of wisdom, the peace of mind, and the joy that comes from living in accordance with the Dhamma.
Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!
