Twenty-five years ago, drummer and producer Phil Martin released his debut solo album Mystical Funk. A quarter century, countless musical adventures and over thirty productions later, the time has finally come for its successor. In January 2026, his new album will be released, a vibrant, groovy journey that brings together Martin’s experiences, influences and musical freedom.

Phil Martin quite literally lives in his studio. Over the past years, he has crafted a unique sound, instantly recognizable by its funky beats, warm production and cosmopolitan grooves. He has produced albums for acts such as The Soul Snatchers, The Jazzinvaders and Laura Vane & the Vipertones. He collaborated with musical legends like Dr. Lonnie Smith (US), Azymuth (BR) and Shawn Lee (UK).

On this new album, Martin played nearly all the instruments himself (drums, percussion, keys, bass, and guitar) but live, he brings his global groove machine to life with a five-piece band, joined by Govert van der Kolm (keys), Ton van der Kolk (bass), Marco Hijl (sax) and Matthijs Sepes or Cees Trappenburg (trumpet). Together, they deliver an energetic, danceable show where standing still simply isn’t an option.

Phil Martin’s sound moves between samba, afrobeat, disco, and funk, with occasional touches of psychedelia. It’s an adventurous and uplifting blend that evokes tropical nights and the dance floors of the seventies. Always with his own unmistakable signature.

In 2026, Phil Martin celebrates not only 25 years of Mystical Funk, but also the beginning of a new musical cycle filled with groove, soul, and energy.
