The diagnosis of tuberculosis infection is medically important in several situations. About one-third of people on earth have latent, dormant infection with tuberculosis which is capable of reactivation, especially if persons are immune suppressed, for example by therapies for arthritis of after transplantation. Traditional tuberculosis skin tests have significant limitations.
In this lecture, Dr. Koelle, UW Professor of Laboratory Medicine, outlines tuberculosis and reviews recently FDA-approved blood tests for tuberculosis infection including strengths, problems and guidelines for effective use.
