One of the many delights I discovered after purchasing the album Clues by Robert Palmer. I was first introduced to his music a year earlier when the smash hit rocker, "Bad Case
Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)," along with "Rolene" by Moon Martin, had suddenly burst on to the pop scene. What a change a year made. Until I looked more closely at the information on the Clues album, I did not know this favorite from it, "I Dream Of Wires," had been composed and recorded earlier in the year by Gary Numan. All I knew about Numan was his hit "Cars" which I had bought as a 45 single not ever hearing his album Telekon. Palmer's cover was one of the futuristic highlights on Clues along with "Looking For Clues," "Johnny and Mary," and a synthpop cover of The Beatles' "Not A Second Time." Palmer was among the most innovative of the recording artists of the 1980's that included (or would soon include) Gary Numan, Talking Heads, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Devo, Thomas Dolby, and a much more experimental David Bowie. I actually looked to these and other similar bands and artists as the hope for the future of contemporary pop and alternative music, never suspecting the rap, dub reggae and hip hop movements that we also began listening to at that time would ultimately emerge victorious at the dawning of the current millennium. So much for gazing into crystal balls, "I Dream Of Wires" still sounds futuristic to me all these nearly forty years later as demonstrated by my latest video.
