Engine Trouble on the Oxford Canal! Diagnosing and Fixing | Narrowboat Grey Wagtail

If you’ve been following my recent cruise down the Oxford Canal, you’ll know things took a worrying turn when my engine, a Beta Marine JD3, began cutting out every time I dropped the revs.

In this video, I dig into the mystery of the low oil pressure problem and the engine stalls, explain how I diagnosed the fault, and walk you through the repair process step by step.

🔧 The issue? The engine would stall at idle due to low oil pressure — a serious and unexpected problem that started suddenly partway through the journey.

🛠 In this video:
• I show how I diagnosed the problem through a series of observations
• Walk you through how the engine and throttle control systems on Grey Wagtail work
• Discover a slipped throttle cable and explain how this affected the idle speed
• Attempt to fix the issue by adjusting the cable tension using some creative canal-side engineering

With a slipped cable, stuck screws, and revs far too high, it took some careful adjustments (and a bike tool!) to get things back under control. Did it work? You’ll have to watch and see…
