When Jackie left the nest just before noon on Friday, apparently to take care of some important eagle business or to possibly defend their territory, her distant chortles were heard. Shadow came in to incubate and ended up in full charge of the eggs and the nest overnight, as Jackie did not return until Saturday morning at 8:28 cam time.

It is unusual behavior for Jackie to be away that length of time, especially during nesting season with two eggs in the nest, and to not be seen or heard on the cameras for 20+ hours. Although we are not certain where she was, we were very relieved to see her return safely as she flew into the nest to reconnect with Shadow and their eggs.

While Jackie was likely off handling a possible intruder or territorial issue causing her to spend the night away from the nest, Shadow stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam when he took over nest and egg duties until Jackie's return. Shadow has had a few opportunities in past seasons to incubate overnight, so although it wasn't totally new to him, he did an amazing job keeping the eggs safe and warm during a very windy night.

Shadow's night was quite eventful as he executed several aggressive wingslaps. The little nocturnal critters were trying to get access to the nest, and just like Jackie, Shadow wasn't having it. He didn't seem to get much shuteye but did manage several egg rolls, a crop drop and a poop shot over the edge of the nest. He also took a few early morning fly-around breaks to stretch before Jackie returned.

Shift changes were back on track yesterday as the wind continued to blow. Shadow nearly toppled over when a gust came up, but his strong legs came to the rescue and kept him firmly planted. These two will continue to be on alert as there are still other active birds in the area.

Thank you for all your support and concern for Jackie's safe return during such an uncertain time. What a beautiful moment to see her fly in, and even more so, to see her reunited with Shadow and their eggs!
