In this review, I break down Sonia Irabor’s feature debut — a coming-of-age drama about ambition, grief, and the weight adults place on children in the name of love. As Nowa prepares for a high-stakes spelling bee, her teacher and older brother project their own fears, failures, and hopes onto her, unaware of the panic attacks and unresolved loss she’s quietly battling.
Led by a gentle, grounded performance from Darasimi Nadi, Supernowa explores high-handed love, misplaced priorities, and the danger of turning a child into a solution. It’s not a perfect film, but it’s emotionally intelligent, restrained, and confident in what it wants to say.
