Centre Approves Rs 3,277 Crore Dulhasti Stage-II Hydropower Project in Jammu and Kashmir
Description
In a major boost to clean energy development in Jammu and Kashmir, the Centre's Expert Appraisal Committee under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has recommended environmental clearance for the 260 MW Dulhasti Stage-II hydropower project in Kishtwar district. The project, estimated to cost Rs 3,277 crore, is an extension of the existing Dulhasti Stage-l power station that has been generating electricity since 2007
Located on the Chenab River, the Dulhasti Stage-Il project will use water released from the current power station through a newly constructed tunnel leading to an underground powerhouse. The project will consist of two generating units of 130 MW each, significantly increasing power generation capacity in the region
Officials said the project has been designed in accordance with the technical framework of the Indus Waters Treaty, even though the treaty was suspended following the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025. Implemented by NHPC in partnership with Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer model, the project is expected to strengthen regional power supply, promote renewable energy and create local employment opportunities
The project also includes strong environmental safeguards, with dedicated funds allocated for pollution control and long-term environmental impact assessment studies to ensure sustainable development of the Chenab River basin
