Cold messaging on LinkedIn a sales pitch is perhaps the most annoying form of marketing. And for good reason. It’s invasive, impersonal, and just plain dumb. There, I said it.
And it’s not just Linkedin Messaging that finds itself home to unwanted sales messages slammed from both real and fake accounts. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and any other social media site that has messaging all contribute to this cringe marketing strategy (if you can even call it a strategy).
If you're like me, you despise getting sales pitches in your LinkedIn messages.
Cold Messaging a sales pitch through LinkedIn Messaging feels like getting a cold call from someone wanting to sell you a fake extended warranty on your car.
But why? Why does it feel so uncomfortable and annoying to get these messages?
First, LinkedIn is marketed as a social network, where connections are made based on trust instead of sales. The cold message pitches in LinkedIn Messaging are counterintuitive to what the site is designed for.
Sure you can find people in your industry and send them messages through it, but why would you slam them with a sales pitch on the first contact.
Think about what this would be like in real life. Imagine being at a professional networking event, walking up to someone, and pitching them before you even said hello.
I'm laughing as I write this at the mere thought of it. Just walk right up and say "I help entrepreneurs and solopreneurs wildly grow their businesses by teaching them how to use social media to get an abundant flow of leads and clients. Can I give you a proposal?"
Do you know what would happen? People would stop talking to you. Fast.
It's creepy.
You'd get glares, snickers, and weird looks. You wouldn't be able to find anyone business-related to speak with because everyone would feel uncomfortable talking with you.
The same is true for using cold messages with a sales pitch in LinkedIn messaging.
If a connection wants to make an introduction or start a conversation about your product, go ahead! That makes strategic sense. But if you are sending messages without an introduction and the first words you type are a sales pitch (even if it's for a free session with you), you are going about things in a way that drives qualified prospects away. Never to return.
You know the adage, you only get one chance to make a first impression.
When you slam into someone's DM with a sales pitch the impression you are making is that you are robotic, copy and paste, automated, and lack a fundamental understanding of how to sell.
You want to make a lasting impression? A good one.
It's not going to happen if you open with a sales pitch. It's going to be a bad one and a chance for a connection to never return.
So what should you do instead? Well, it depends on your goals as well as the relationship you wish to have with your prospects and clients.
What if there was a better way? A way that didn't involve spamming people with cold messages?
Well, there is. It's a strategy that focuses on creating amazing content that attracts people to your business instead of annoying them with sales pitches.
When you master a strategy that has prospects coming to you instead of you having to constantly be reaching out to them, you open up an entirely new world for your business and your life.
This strategy is called Inbound Marketing.
What the heck is Inbound Marketing?
Inbound marketing, also called inbound lead generation, focuses on pulling people instead of pushing your message to them.
When you send out cold messages about your products or services, you are pushing your sales pitch onto prospects.
But when you create the content that attracts prospects to you, THEY reach out to you asking for information about how you can serve them.
There's an important difference in how you are perceived as an entrepreneur when you position yourself as a magnet instead of a firehose. I hope that makes sense.
