Here's a shootout featuring four Precision (or 'P-Bass-adjacent') basses from my collection!
-2008 Fender MiM Precision
-2005 Yamaha BB414
-2023 Kala Solid-Body U•Bass
-1978 Fender USA Precision
🎵- 'New Year's Day, by U2, from 'War' (1983)
My verdict?
Winner's got to be the USA P-Bass in terms of closeness to the original tone and pure roadworn MOJO.
BUT:
The U•Bass deserves a massive honourable mention! Why? It's insane how close it sounds to the original recording, and the other basses! That it can even be seriously considered in the same category as three other, much more well-known and more oft-recorded, full-size bass guitars, despite a 23-inch scale length and being a completely new design, is incredible work by Kala really 🤯 (also it's mega fun to play)
