My explanations/rants on the plane of existence called purgatory:
In my mind purgatory isn't a tangible thing, it's the imaginations worst fears brought to life through a tortured time loop. One you can grasp but never really get a hold of.
This is what Dean realizes but Buffy fails to see.
She gives up too easily.
She admits she could've done better, tried harder, but just didn't.
In the end it's a flashback of how they both came to the conclusion they could just wake up and that it was always within their power to do so.
The final moments between them was their interactions in the cabin...realizing once and for all they were themselves again and here on Earth. Together; at last.
