Most AEDs are capable of detecting whether the pads are in the right position on the body. But when attending to someone in cardiac arrest, every second counts.
Earlier defibrillation increases survival rates, so knowing where to put a defibrillator on the chest will help you give someone else a better chance of resuscitation.

When someone is in cardiac arrest, every second counts.
Knowing where to put defibrillator pads on the chest will help you give someone else a better chance of resuscitation.
Two pads will need to be placed on the chest of the person.
The first is placed on the right-hand side of the chest below the collar bone.
The second is placed on the left-hand side, below the armpit.
Children
Children over eight years old or who weigh more than 25kg should be treated like adults.
Otherwise, one pad should be placed on the chest and the other on the back. This is to prevent the pads from touching each other.
Pacemakers
A pacemaker shouldn’t be affected by the use of a defibrillator, but it's still important not to place a pad over a pacemaker.
Feel the person's chest for a hard 4" lump and place the pad as close to the correct position as possible without covering the pacemaker.
Women
Place the pads in the same way as you would on a man. Breasts should not get in the way.
Remove a bra if it is in the way and take care not to let the pads come into contact with the metal underwire.
Nipple Piercings
Nipple piercings won’t stop and AED from working. With normal pad placement, a nipple piercing can be avoided.
If you must cover a piercing with a pad, the person might get a burn from the electrical shock, but defibrillation is more important.
At Steroplast we help businesses support anyone in an emergency situation with reliable first aid equipment.
