The 21-gun salute is one of the highest military honors, and the number isn't arbitrary. It comes from naval tradition: a warship entering a friendly port would fire its cannons until empty, proving it had no hostile intent, since reloading took a long time. Early British warships fired seven guns; shore forts, which had more gunpowder, answered with three shots for each — totaling 21. Odd numbers were used because an even-numbered salute traditionally signaled that the ship's captain had died at sea. The U.S. formally adopted the 21-gun salute in 1875. Note: it's distinct from the three-volley rifle salute fired at military funerals, which people often confuse with it.
