(27 May 1976) Major Otelo De Carvalho, the man who once declared he could be the Fidel Castro of Europe, announced he would run in Portugal's presidential election on june 27th. One of the chief architects of the april, nineteen seventy four, revolution, the former military security chief was one of the most powerful men in the country until his fall from power due to alleged complicity in the abortive military revolt last november 25th. Carvalho was then demoted from General to Major. The forty-year-old officer announced his candidacy at a Lisbon press conference.
