Documentary on the history and development of the steam train in twentieth century USA. Majority of the trains are filmed moving slowly in US outer suburban areas. All footage is shot at the time (1958). No archival footage is used.
Trains shown in order are the 1899 New York Central steam train, 1917 Shenandoah Central, the Camel Back, the Prairie type ? 2-6-2, Mikado 2-8-2, Shifting engine, Pacific Class 4-6-2, The Pennsylvania K4, The New York Central Hudson locomotive and The Milwaukee Rose 4-4-2.
Shot of a diesel engine locomotive travelling across a flat treeless field, lightly covered with snow. Brief shot inside the diesel's driver's compartment. The diesel then stops at a quiet country train station platform. Shot of a steam freight train carrying a long load, moving through freight rail yards. A Grand Cross Mountain type 4-8-2 steams across a flat snow covered prairie. Shot of The Northern aka The Niagara, the last of the dual service locomotives built for the USA. (Dual service meaning a train offering both passenger and freight services.)
Then shots of more modern steam trains. The 2-8-2, The Santa Fe 3-10 class ?, The Norfolk & Western steam freight train, The Southern Pacific Mallet class and The Union Pacific, the largest of all steam engines. Shots of train enthusiasts at a USA suburban train exhibition. A long steam freight train passes slowly through a train yard and fades out.
