Desperate for shelter: Homeless people choose jail over the streets

Описание: We’re constantly hearing about ex-convicts re-entering society only to end up homeless. However, there's another side to this issue: some homeless individuals actually opt to return to jail voluntarily.

While many see jails as four walls without freedom, some homeless individuals see it as a safe place to sleep, with hot meals, and basic medical care.

“You've heard the edge three squares and a cot,” Martin County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy John Budensiek said. “So, we do see homeless individuals that intentionally get themselves arrested for misdemeanor crimes, for the most part, so they can be incarcerated just to have a place to stay out of the weather for a few days.”
