The Syrian President attended prayers on Friday, a few hours into an agreed UN/Arab League-brokered four-day ceasefire to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.
The four-day ceasefire, proposed by UN/Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, began at 06.00 local time (05.00 BST).
President Assad made a rare appearance on state TV on Friday, attending morning prayers in a Damascus mosque hours after a ceasefire took effect for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.
However, there are reports that the ceasefire has already been violated with fierce clashes between rebels and Syrian forces in the northern town of Maaret al-Numan.
