In 1974, when I was 6 years old, my Dad took me to Dorney Park Speedway in Allentown PA for the first time and it was forever etched in my memories. Spectators sat almost on top of the racing, separated from the cars by a wooden fence that bowed when it was hit. It was very intimate and intense. The sound of the engines, smell of the exhaust and the squeal of the tires as the cars slid through the tight turns made a lifelong racing fan of me.
The track was torn down by the new park management after the 1986 season to make room for a roller coaster and other attractions. A tough ending for thousands of people that had spent decades of summer Saturday nights at "The Park"...
