Ancient Egypt archaeology breakthrough: Watch as colossal 2000-year-old statues emerge from the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt's first underwater archaeological operation in 25 years!
In August 2025, Egyptian authorities successfully lifted three massive ancient statues from the sunken city of Canopus in Abu Qir Bay near Alexandria. This incredible underwater archaeological discovery includes:
🏺 A quartzite sphinx bearing the cartouche of Pharaoh Ramesses II
🏺 A granite colossus from the late Ptolemaic era
🏺 A white marble statue of a Roman nobleman
The submerged ruins represent an extension of the ancient city of Canopus, once a prominent center during the Ptolemaic dynasty and Roman Empire. Over centuries, earthquakes and rising sea levels plunged this historic coastal settlement beneath the Mediterranean waters.
Led by French underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio and the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, this excavation has revealed temples, residential buildings, industrial spaces, and a 400-foot commercial dock. The site has been called a "living witness" to Egypt's incredible history.
This video showcases the dramatic crane operations that brought these priceless artifacts to the surface, marking a significant milestone in underwater archaeology and ancient Egyptian heritage preservation.
