This delightful family drama is set in a tied farm cottage in Yorkshire in the early 60’s.
George the farmer (Tom Last) lives with his frail mother (Trish Moram) He has been cast in a local production of The York Mystery plays, encouraged by family friend Doreen (Helen Bohorquez) who is secretly in love with him. His sister Barbara (Mandy Humphrey) and her husband (Robert Gregory) have moved to the nearby council estate with their family. Their teenage son (Thom Humphrey) is about to leave school and worried about his future.
John (Nick Merrick) the assistant director of the play becomes involved with the family and George is agonisingly torn between his roots and the desire to join John and the theatre world in London.
Essentially this gentle play focusses on a tender love affair but it also makes us think about the importance of class allegiances and the strength of one’s roots and family ties.
This play is not to be missed. As one critic wrote -
