A NASA WB-57 high-altitude research aircraft performed an emergency gear-up belly landing at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas, on January 27, 2026, around 11:30 a.m. CST due to a mechanical failure preventing the landing gear from deploying. Video footage captured from a SkyFOX helicopter shows the plane sliding along Runway 17R-35L, sparking and producing brief flames from friction before coming to a safe stop.
The two crew members on board exited safely with no injuries reported, and emergency response teams from the Houston Fire Department quickly contained the situation. The WB-57, one of only three in NASA's fleet based at Johnson Space Center, is a modified B-57 Canberra jet capable of flying above 60,000 feet for scientific missions including atmospheric sampling. The FAA and NASA have launched investigations into the cause, with the runway closed for aircraft removal and assessment.
