A cunning fox, desiring the cheese, flatters the crow by praising her beauty and suggesting she must have a lovely voice as well. Eager to prove him right, the crow opens her beak to sing, dropping the cheese in the process. The fox quickly snatches it and walks away, leaving the crow humiliated.
The moral of the story: Beware of flattery, especially when it comes from those who want something from you.
This fable still applies today. Whether it’s being swayed by flattery on social media, in advertising, or in personal relationships, the lesson reminds us to stay grounded and think critically when someone seems too complimentary.
This fable is one of the hundreds attributed to Aesop, a storyteller believed to have lived in ancient Greece around the 6th century BCE. It has been retold countless times in different cultures and languages over the centuries.
