This generation is NOT special

Gen Z is cripplingly lonely, drowning in student debt, coming of age through historical events, and struggling to gain independence amidst the rising cost of living. Despite growing up with godlike technology, having all the information at our fingertips, and now having AI to do everything for us, why is it still so hard to live? Why does it feel like it’s never been harder to do anything at all?

If you’re becoming an adult post-pandemic, you’ve probably experienced an inner monologue somewhat like this… Today, we’re going to talk about this ‘my generation’ victim narrative and why it is actually a self-fulfilling prophecy holding us back.

Many people online proclaim that Gen Z is lazy, doesn’t want to work, and is "failing to launch." Gen Z is buying into the idea that there’s something wrong with them or that they are somehow defective due to their environment and circumstances that shaped their upbringing, like the Internet and social media. However, Gen Z is not special; the problems young people face today are not any worse than what other generations have experienced.

Social media has amplified the coming-of-age angst, fear, and negativity already present in emerging adults, blowing this issue way out of proportion. Sure, there are unique challenges, but most challenges can be overcome, as evidenced by older generations. There is nothing wrong with our generation. Gen Z and millennials are taking their time to figure out life and how to become adults in this world, just like every other generation before.
