This year is proving to be a record breaking pink salmon run in the Pacific Northwest, with as many as 29 million potentially returning to the Fraser River for this odd-year run. The numbers are so big that it may affect the reproductive success of co-migrating sockeye salmon, coho salmon, and steelhead trout.
Pink salmon reach reproductive maturity in their second year, at which point they typically migrate to their stream of origin to spawn. The populations of northern British Columbia and Alaska migrate in even numbered years, while the populations of the Fraser River and Washington spawn in odd numbered years. Because they spawn in different years, the odd and even year populations do not interbreed.
Males develop a pronounced hump on their back as well as a hooked jaw (called a kype) during migration. The hump serves to attract females.
I love the scenes with the salmon fry swimming with the big fish! I have been told the fry are likely coho salmon.
