How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) be deployed in ways that strengthen frontline health systems and advance equity? This World Health Summit 2025 workshop explored how AI can support public health when communities are engaged, infrastructure is in place, and tools are designed for real-world conditions.
The session highlighted the rapid growth of health-related AI and digital tools, along with the inequities that arise when innovation outpaces system readiness. Speakers discussed examples where AI has improved care delivery – such as AI-assisted tuberculosis triage in Nigeria and co-designed community health tools in Rwanda – as well as cases where poorly aligned technologies failed to sustain impact.
Participants examined the conditions needed for equitable AI deployment, including strong public health systems, meaningful community engagement, and investment in digital infrastructure. The discussion emphasized the importance of local relevance, long-term usability, and policies that support responsible innovation aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
This workshop was part of the World Health Summit 2025 in Berlin and was co-hosted by the Global Solutions Initiative (GSI). Moderator and speakers included Ilona Kickbusch (Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies), Caroline Mbindyo (Amref Health Africa), Ismail Hassan Rumatila (Ministry of Health, Tanzania), Myriam Fernández Martín (AWS), and Henrik Ullum (Statens Serum Institut).
The World Health Summit 2025 was a global platform that brought together leaders from science, politics, the private sector, and civil society to advance health and well-being worldwide. Learn more: https://www.worldhealthsummit.org/
