The One Unit System, introduced in 1955, was an administrative and political attempt by the Government of Pakistan to merge the western provinces—Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and the North-West Frontier Province—into a single province called West Pakistan. The policy aimed to create administrative efficiency, promote national unity, and establish parity between East and West Pakistan.

However, instead of fostering cohesion, the One Unit system exacerbated regional inequalities, marginalized ethnic identities, and centralized power, particularly benefiting Punjab at the expense of smaller provinces. It faced widespread resistance from Sindhis, Baloch, and Pashtuns, who saw the move as an attack on their cultural and political autonomy. Furthermore, it failed to address the growing economic and political grievances of East Pakistan, contributing to long-term instability.

After persistent opposition and growing unrest, the One Unit system was abolished in 1970, and the original provinces were restored. The failure of this policy remains a significant chapter in Pakistan’s history, highlighting the dangers of ignoring regional diversity in nation-building.
