Описание: The coming and going of cosmic serpents, suns and flowers during annual solar cycles is a popular theme in Mexican symbolism. Mexico’s famous ‘sun-calendar’ from the capital city of the Aztec empire (Tenochtitlan) reflects this association by presenting two turquoise-serpent bodies around a sun-and-flower mandala. The bodies of these serpents are formed by a train of emergent lotus palmettes that erupt on the side of the massive disk in the traditional configuration of two lotus buds and a blossom. These three flowers connote the three day life-span of each flower that constitutes the body of the sacred serpent. While this observation has never been recognized by art historians, it is key to understanding Aztec perspectives on cosmic time and natural order.
