ABRSM 2021-2022 Grade 6, B:1. Mazurka in G minor ~ Fryderyk Chopin. Piano exam piece
Op. 67 No. 2
The Mazurka originated as a Polish folk dance from the provinance of Mazovia, near Warsaw. It is triple time with an accent on the second or third beat and was traditionally accompanied by a bagpipe drone. It became very popular as a drawing-room dance in Western Eurpoe in the 1830s and 1840s, and the Polish composer Chopin wrote more than 50 of them. He also had a nationalistic interest in the mazurka, which is reflected in his adoption of certain melodic and rhythmic features of Polish folk music in his stylisation of the dance.
This Mazurka was composed in the last year of Chopin's life (1849) and published posthumously in 1855. Like many of his keyboard dances, it is written in ternary form (ABA). The A section cadences in the tonic, G minor, at bar 16. It is followed by a contrasting B section in the relative major, B flat, with a striking chromatic answering phrase marked PP e legatissimo (bars 21-4). A sotto voce solo for the right hand reintroduces the tonic key and heralds the return of section A.
