ここにいう極光とは、地球北半球の高緯度極域の大気圏に発生するオーロラのこと。作曲者の非科学的なイメージでは、オーロラは、太陽風の光のプラズマが昼の側の地球に当たった後、地球の裏側（夜）に回り込んで発光する、いわば太陽風の残光である。昼側の地球は青く輝き、夜側の残光は超現実的で神秘的な多色の光の帯となって大気圏に揺らめく。
　この作品は、そのような現象を巡っての幻想曲であり、地球大気圏と周辺宇宙空間の環境が保たれることを願う小品でもある。
　トランペットは輝かしい音色で、太陽風の歌を奏する。ピアノはここでは、多数の金属弦が昼と夜の大気圏の輝きとそのうねりを表現する鍵盤打楽器である。
　曲はNHK交響楽団首席奏者菊本和昭さんに捧げられている。菊本さんの美しい響きと艶やかな歌い回しに作曲者は熱く魅了されてきた。
菊本さんと、菊本さんとの共演を重ねられているピアニスト新居由佳梨さんによって初演されることを大変嬉しく思う。（西村 朗）

‘Polar lights’ in the title of this piece refers to the aurora generated in the atmosphere at high latitudes in the northern hemisphere. In my own unscientific imagination, the aurora is a kind of solar afterglow which arises when the plasma from sunlight comes into contact with the Earth on the daytime side, after which it generates light having rotated on to the reverse nighttime side of the Earth. The daytime side is a resplendent blue, while the afterglow on the nighttime side undulates in the atmosphere in the form of surreal, mysterious, multichromatic light.
This work is a fantasy based on this phenomenon in the hope that the Earth’s atmosphere and the neighbouring cosmic spatial environment can be preserved.
The radiant tone of the trumpet gives rise to a solar song. For its part, the piano is treated as a keyed percussion instrument with metal strings being used to express the brilliance and undulations of the atmosphere during the day and at night.
The piece is dedicated to Kazuaki Kikumoto, principal trumpet of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, whose beautiful tone and lustrous lyricism I find irresistibly attractive.
I am very happy that the work is to be premiered on this occasion by its dedicatee together with the pianist Yukari Arai. (Akira Nishimura)
