“Smilin’ Billy” is an original composition by Grammy®-nominated composer and pianist Donald Vega, written in honor of the legendary drummer Billy Higgins, one of Donald’s earliest mentors in jazz. This work was commissioned by Chamber Music America and funded in part by the Doris Duke Foundation.

Donald first encountered Billy Higgins after moving to South Central Los Angeles, where Billy had created a community space for young musicians. Local kids would gather to play, listen, and sit in with visiting jazz legends—forming Donald’s first consistent immersion in the jazz tradition. Billy was always smiling, always welcoming, and always lifting everyone around him through music, generosity, and joy.
Smilin’ Billy reflects that spirit—community, mentorship, swing, and heart—capturing the warmth and humanity that Billy Higgins brought to every room and every note.
