a. One of the elders of this congregation asked me to.
b. This may be one of the most useful sermons you will have this year
i. If not the most useful, at least it will be the last sermon you have this year.
ii. Useful- at least 2 things are accomplished. They heard about God & you spoke about God
II. Why Did You Assemble? Worship!
a. Worship! 188x in ESV. %61 in OT. Do not use Gospels or Revelation = %80
i. The Gospels pre-date the church
ii. Rev is not really a book of church activities
III. Why Does the Church Assemble?
a. The 1st century church made a habit of meeting on the first day of the week (1 Corinthians 16.1-2). When they met, one of their primary activities was to share their common union in the Lord (Acts 20.7). Prayer has been associated with worship since the time of Abraham (Genesis 20). Communicating the word of God was common as was singing (1 Corinthians 14.26). When meeting, the physical needs of the Saints were addressed (2 Corinthians 9).
IV. Worshipping in Spirit and in Truth John 4.23-24
a. Basic guidance to the Corinthians
i. Is your singing euphoric? Not like that, but like this asks the reader to compare both Ephesians 5.18-21
ii. Balance euphoria with decency and order 1 Cor 14.26, 33, 40
b. “Decency and order” are not supposed to overpower euphoria
i. Is church boring? The “Children are to be seen and not heard” teachings have bled over.
1. We do a terrific job of worshipping in truth, but is our spirit moved?
ii. Nadab & Abihu blended in Leviticus 10.1-2, 8-10
iii. The case can be made that being of cheerful heart like a drunk was the instruction Ephesians 5.18
iv. Paul issues the same warning as Moses 1 Corinthians 11.20-22
1. This is not advocating for alcohol. I'm advocating for energy and enthusiasm

V. Wrap it up
a. I made a request of several people. Here are some responses
“IN ONE SENTENCE OR LESS in YOUR OPINION what is the best response to the world: ”How was church?””
It was good to learn more about God's Word and spiritually recharge with Christians.
God-centered, Spirit-filled, and reverent. Good for my eternal soul.
It was a wonderful time spent with my family.
It depends on the day. That's my answer. I leave church with a different perception every week, if someone who's not a Christian asks me what my experience was my answer would differ. If you're looking for something more general I suppose it would be “it was a blessing to assemble with the Lord's people today." If it was a great day I would expound on that. But tone communicates a lot in that sentence.
b. I was glad when they said to me let us go to the House of the Lord Psalm 122.1-2
i. Stress location, cite Hebrews 4, Revelation 4, 1 John 1
ii. The throne of the Father; entry provided by the Christ; with groanings of the Spirit
c. It is good that we are here 17:4; Mk 9:5; Lk 9:33
i. Peter was excited for all the wrong reasons, but he didn't want to be anywhere else.
d. I hope the Lord was as pleased to be there as I was; Or, it was a good place to be.
