Durham County’s Bull City United program is continuing to make a difference in decreasing gun violence in Durham. The program hires outreach workers and violence interrupters to go out into the community to help identify, detect, interrupt, and re-direct violence. While the program has been run by the County since 2016, we entered into an agreement two years ago that would allow Bull City United to expand its reach. Through that additional financial support, a recent update to the City Council shows that the program was able to expand from its initial two areas to six areas of focus. The update shows that there were 2,789 mediations that the program was part of in those focus areas over the past year. Mediations are intended to interrupt the potential for retaliation and violence.
