You're down a pawn in the endgame. Your opponent is trying to queen it and win. Can you save the game? Yes—if you know these defensive rules. In this video, I'll show you
Rule #1: Capture that pawn if possible (obvious but essential),
Rule #2: Get your king in front of the pawn,
Rule #3: Don't let their king get ahead,
Rule #4: Use opposition to hold the draw, and
The rook pawn exception (a & h pawns).

Now you need to know how to defend when you're the one pawn down. These defensive techniques are just as important as winning techniques—maybe more important, since you'll face these positions constantly.
Defense in chess gets less attention than attack, but it's what separates strong players from weak ones. Knowing you can save a draw down a pawn gives you confidence in the middlegame to trade into these positions when appropriate. It's not about giving up—it's about knowing your defensive resources.
