We look at the importance of interdisciplinary research in how society prepares for and responds to infectious disease epidemics.
The 21st Century has already seen a number of devastating epidemics of diseases including Ebola, MERS, Zika and SARS-CoV-2, with complex interactions between microbes, people, animals and ecosystems. Increased global mobility, population density and climate change are all contributing to the rise of epidemics with serious social and economic consequences. We must work across disciplines to better prepare, prevent and respond to epidemics.
