In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erased two cities from existence in less than 24 hours, and the 16,000 people who died had no word for what was killing them. The Romans didn't know volcanoes existed. They thought Vesuvius was just a really good mountain for growing grapes.
This video breaks down the final day of Pompeii hour by hour: the ignored warnings, the pumice storms, the pyroclastic surges that boiled people's brains inside their skulls, and the 18-year-old kid who accidentally named an entire category of natural disaster while watching his uncle die.
