What is PTH, and why does it increase in kidney patients?
PTH (parathyroid hormone) is secreted by the parathyroid glands and plays a key role in maintaining calcium and phosphorus balance in the body. In people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the kidneys lose their ability to regulate these minerals properly. As a result, calcium levels drop and phosphorus levels rise. To correct this imbalance, the parathyroid glands release extra PTH — a condition called secondary hyperparathyroidism. If left uncontrolled, persistently high PTH can weaken the bones and lead to serious complications. That’s why regular monitoring and proper management are essential.
