There are a few species of ‘broomrape’ (Aphyllon) reported in Colorado, but the only report of Aphyllon franciscanum has been in Montezuma County until the species was found in spring 2025 in Boulder County. Dr. Adam Schneider, Assistant Professor, University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, has been studying the photosynthetic members of the parasitic plant family Orobanchaceae (primarily Aphyllon, Kopsiopsis and Phelipanche) for many years. Hard to find, largely subterranean, and often rare, these plants take extreme patience to work on. Recent genetic analyses, coupled with continued field and herbarium study have led to some significant changes to the group, including the reversion of native American species of Orobanche to the genus Aphyllon, description of new species, and revision of existing species concepts. This presentation will provide updates on current work that is relevant to the Colorado flora, as well as an overview of the unique biology and physiology of these parasitic plants.
