Four million people were sent emergency phone alerts warning of the risk posed by Storm Éowyn, which forecasters said could be the strongest to hit the UK in generations.

People in the most at-risk areas, covering central Scotland, the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland, received a message, accompanied by a “loud siren-like sound” lasting ten seconds.
Storm Éowyn has already broken Ireland’s record for the highest wind speed, according to the Irish meteorological service.
A maximum gust of 114mph was observed at Mace Head, on the west coast, at 5am on Friday, topping the previous record gust of 113mph.
Met Eireann later said that the high winds had “interrupted data supply” from the station in Mace Head.
The mean wind speed record of 81mph, set in 1945 at Foynes, Co Limerick, was also broken during the storm, the service added.
